I'm not ignoring you but.....

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 13, 2008, 3:30 PM
Just a short note to say I no longer have regular internet access. Living up a mountain. I occasionally visit internet cafe's but I usually have lots of things to do while I'm there, so sorry if I'm not as involved in deviant art as I was last year. Missing chatting to you all, but talking to the donkey instead :-)

It's rather embarrassing to note, but I believe this is the first time I've ever visited your page.

I'm rather fond of your photographic work. Most of your photos seem to be recent uploads...
is photography something you're experimenting with, or is it something you have experience with?

A friend of mine left his wallet in a taxi on Saturday night. It was handed to the police on Monday and he got it back in the post today. This wasn't fluke. We all knew that this is what would happen. Koreans are very honest.

Prostitution is technically illegal, widespread (sometimes next to police stations) and just about discrete enough that people can turn a blind eye to it (well Korean people can). Homosexuality doesn't exist as far as most Koreans are concerned. People have big lavish weddings in their early twenties, sometimes after surprisingly short engagements. Sex outside marriage is frowned on, and arranged marriages still happen occasionally, but there are lots of "love hotels". Confucianism makes children very obedient to their parents and everyone "knows their place". It can be stifling for foreigners, but the society functions well and there is very little risk of theft or street crime.

=silentpair:iconsilentpair: Oct 17, 2007, 3:26:41 PM
doh. i can't live anywhere with crap beer...even if the girls are quite nice to look at. it's weird that it's so conservative; from what little i've heard, they're pretty open about prostitution and other stuff of that ilk. oh well. maybe i'd better visit it first. thanks.
~pignut:iconpignut: Oct 17, 2007, 7:40:21 AM
Teaching here is pretty good. If you're a tightwad like me you can save quite a lot of cash. Korea has nice mountains and some interesting cultural stuff (although the Koreans hide this pretty well behind the modern plastic and neon). It's a very conservative country, and the traditional Confucian style of teaching is extremely dull, although this is changing slowly (I've found the elementary schools are much more laid back and allow more interesting lessons). Koreans like to do everything at the last minute in a mad panic, and change stuff last minute too, so if you are the kind of person who likes to plan ahead this may be frustrating.

Bring quality coffee with you if you can't live without it, and homebrew supplies are a good thing to bring over too, if you can, because the beer also sucks and malt, yeast, hops etc. are expensive here (the local rice beer is good, but if you like anything other than fizzy tasteless lager, you will be disappointed).
